Arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby has firmed up plans to open its first store in Tucson by April 2013. Construction is underway at the Benenson retail center, 5555 E. Broadway, where Hobby Lobby will share an existing, completely renovated building with SteinMart.
Once open, Hobby Lobby officials expect to hire 35 to 50 workers. The hourly pay levels have been set at $13 for full-time employees and $9 for part-time workers. This is Hobby Lobby’s first location in the Tucson market and 13th store in Arizona.
“Adding new jobs and revitalizing an empty facility enables us to become an integral part of the community while sharing in the growth of both the city and the state,” said John Schumacher, assistant vice president of advertising for Hobby Lobby.
The Benenson retail center is on 7.4 acres on the northeast corner of north Craycroft Road and east Broadway. It is owned and being redeveloped by Benenson Capital Partners, New York.
An existing 81,000 square-foot building, vacated by Mervyn’s department store in 2008, has been split into about 50,000 square feet for Hobby Lobby and 30,000 square feet for SteinMart.
SteinMart opened just prior to Thanksgiving.
In a new-built, 14,500 square-foot multi-tenant pad on the south end of the site, Mattress Firm, Vitamin Shoppe, and two additional tenants will locate there in 2013. No definite opening dates have been announced.
Hobby Lobby, headquartered in Oklahoma City, is a privately held retail chain with over 520 stores nationally. Its arts and crafts products include home décor, floral, fabric, needle art, custom framing, baskets and scrapbook supplies.
